We have a service and repair business with very busy phones so we are constantly on the telephone taking orders and talking to customers. We can walk about 300 feet away from the base without any problem including outside the office. You may be able to go farther or be limited to shorter distances but I believe it would depend on the construction of your building. There are several buttons on the headset and one I find very useful which is a MUTE button. I can talk privately for a moment if needed without the caller ever knowing and there is no need to put them on hold. The other buttons are for volume and answering the call. One more great feature to point out is that you can move about the office to get files, make copies or faxes and even work from another desk without putting someone on hold.As far as battery life goes, when left to charge... No handset lifter since I work near the phone and have little need to answer the phone remotely. There is an auxiliary phone jack on the base station, so my old corded model is plugged in there and you can switch back and forth at will. The base station has about four inches of separation from the left/handset side of the 7961. o It took Plantronics tech support to get the sound quality to an acceptable level.
